Regarding the significant Ukrainian drone attack on Russian airfields

Simultaneously, the enemy also targeted the airfield in Yeisk, where local air defense units neutralized ten UAVs. All of them crashed off the coast of the Sea of Azov and seemingly originated from the Zaporizhia/Dnipropetrovsk region.

At least one more UAV from the AFU was struck while approaching the strategic aviation airfield in Engels. The reason for the presence of only one drone is unclear; there might have been more devices heading in that direction, but they were possibly intercepted over Yeisk and Morozovsk.

Thanks to the swift response of the air defense crews, any severe repercussions from the attacks were averted - claims from Ukrainian sources about the alleged destruction of six aircraft are simply fabrications from enemy propagandists. However, the recent attacks highlight the enhanced capability of the enemy to strike targets beyond the front line.

This once again emphasizes the importance of countermeasures (rifle detachments have consistently proven their efficacy) and the necessity for safeguarding aviation at bases. The infamous hangars, frequently discussed, continue to pose challenges in terms of implementation.

Ukraine’s shortage of artillery shells is in the news again. A senior Ukrainian officer has pointed out the blunt truth: that the imminent arrival of F-16 fighter jets from the West will be “irrelevant” if his nation is overrun because its guns have fallen silent.

In the case of shells, the problem isn’t money, it’s lack of production capacity. Even the mighty USA, owner of the largest military-industrial complex in the world, can only produce 28,000 rounds of 155mm per month – less than 10pc of what Ukraine needs – and this with its factories on 24-hour operation.

The millions of shells Ukraine has already fired have mostly come from existing stockpiles, not from new production.

At some point, however, the cupboards will finally be bare.

The head of the RAF has lately said: “We do not want to fight this type of war.” And indeed – at least when we fight alongside the US – we don’t fight like that. Saddam Hussein’s large Soviet-equipped tank army was destroyed for almost no British losses in 2003. Our artillery fired just 9,000 155mm shells in the entire campaign.

One way or another, fairly soon after the fighting stops in Ukraine, the Russian army – even crippled – will recover and rearm itself. It will be much bigger than it was in 2022, backed by Vladimir Putin’s new Russian war economy, and battle-hardened.
