11 dead in Afghanistan C-130 crash

Six U.S. service members and five civilians were killed when a C-130J crashed shortly after midnight Friday local time at Jalalabad Airfield, Afghanistan, according to ta 455th Air Expeditionary Wing news release.

The names of those killed have not been released. The Defense Department does not publicly identify fatalities until 24 hours after their next of kin have been notified.

Air Force Maj. Tony Wickman, a spokesman for 455th Air Expeditionary Wing, said an unknown number of people on the ground were also killed, without elaborating. Afghan officials had no immediate details on the crash or any casualty figures.

The six U.S. service members who died comprised the plane's crew. The passengers were civilian contractors working with NATO's Resolute Support mission and were the only passengers on board, Wickman added.

The plane was assigned to the 774th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron, part of 455th Air Expeditionary Wing, the news release says.

The Taliban have claimed they shot the plane out of the sky, but the group is prone to exaggeration.

Wickman dismissed the claim, saying that "it is with high confidence that we can say it does not appear that enemy fire was involved." Few other details were available and an investigation was underway, he added.

On Thursday, Fox News anchor Bret Baier tweeted that an unnamed official said to expect casualties.

C-130s are used to transport military personnel and cargo.

Талибаните имаат потреба од PR а америте секако да скријат ваков неуспех. Баш ме интересира како е "соборен" и во која фаза на летот.

Engine Failure, Impact Eyed After Deadly Afghanistan C-130 Crash

A U.S. C-130 transport plane that crashed at Jalalabad airport in Afghanistan early Friday morning — killing 14 people — apparently suffered engine failure before the accident, a senior defense official said.
At least 10 Americans were killed in the crash — six U.S. service members and four contractors supporting the mission to train Afghan security forces.
Three Afghan civilians on the ground and another contractor of unknown nationality were also killed. Officials previously said two Afghans died in the crash.

The official said the transport aircraft clipped a security barrier, but it has not yet been determined whether the impact occurred before or after the engine failure.

President Barack Obama on Friday expressed his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the crash. "As we mark this terrible loss of life, we are reminded of the sacrifice brave Americans and our Afghan partners make each and every day in the name of freedom and security," Obama said in a statement.

"Their willingness to serve so selflessly will not be forgotten," Obama said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims' families and loved ones during this difficult hour. May God bless their souls."

Four of the crew who died were airmen were from Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, and two were from Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts. Four of the five contractors were Americans, but the nationality of the other contractor was still unknown Friday, the defense official said.

The identities of those killed were not released. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter said the circumstances of the crash are still under investigation.

"While we are still trying to determine exactly what happened, this is a reminder of the risks that our men and women face serving their country in remote places all over the world," Carter said. "Let us not forget the importance of their service, and the critical mission they died supporting."

The military said it does not believe there was any enemy fire involved in the crash.

Victims of C-130 crash in Afghanistan identified

The military released on Saturdy the names of the six airmen killed a day earlier in the crash of a C-130J Super Hercules at Jalalabad Air Field in eastern Afghanistan.

Six crewmembers and five contractors assigned to the 455th Air Expeditionary Wing died early Friday when their transport aircraft crashed at takeoff. At least two Afghans on the ground also died in the crash, according to media reports.

The Defense Department identified the victims as:

Capt. Jonathan J. Golden, 33, of Camarillo, Calif.; Capt. Jordan B. Pierson, 28, of Abilene, Texas; Staff Sgt. Ryan D. Hammond, 26, of Moundsville, W. Va.; Senior Airman Quinn L. Johnson-Harris, 21, of Milwaukee, Wis.; Senior Airman Nathan C. Sartain, 29, of Pensacola, Fla.; Airman 1st Class Kcey E. Ruiz, 21, of McDonough, Ga.

Pierson, Golden, Hammond and Johnson-Harris were deployed from the 317th Airlift Squadron at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas. Sartain and Ruiz were from the 66th Security Forces Squadron at Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. A senior official at the Pentagon said Friday the aircraft hit a ground object as it was ascending, lost control and crashed into a guard tower at the end of the air field. Afghan civilians in the guard tower were killed in the ensuing fire, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

On Saturday, the wing held a fallen comrade ceremony to honor the victims.

"We’ve taken a blow, but I’m proud of the way we’ve come together and supported each other," said Lt. Col. Mitchell Spillers, 774th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron commander, according to a Win news release. "That must continue."

"This was one of my best crews; they had a positive impact on everyone around them," Spillers said.

Chief Master Sgt. Matt Grengs, 455th command chief, said airmen across the wing, though grieving, should continue the mission to honor their sacrifice, the release said.

"We can only hope that the anguish of the families of these fallen heroes is tempered with the knowledge that their loved ones died doing what they loved for the nation they loved," he was quoted as saying.
