BULGARIAN NAVY HELICOPTER COLLIDED WITH FRIGATE, PILOT KILLED
A Bulgarian Navy pilot lost his life and two other officers on board sustained injuries on 9 June when their Eurocopter AS.565MB Panther multipurpose helicopter (military identification number 902, construction number 6849) crashed in the Black Sea following collision with Bulgarian Navy Wielingen-class frigate Drazki 41 (former Belgian Navy frigate Wandelaar F912).
The accident happened at 12.28 hours when the helicopter crew approached the frigate in what was to be a farewell fly-past for Drazki crew-members only minutes after Flotilla Admiral Malen Chunekov declared end to live-firing exercise Black Sea-2017. At the critical moment the helicopter's main rotor went in contact with the fore flag-pole of the frigate causing the helicopter to become uncontrollable at low altitude forcing the pilot to promptly initiate emergency landing in the water nearby with landing gear and emergency floatation system deployed.
Killed in this accident that happened in an open sea some 20 kilometers south of Varna was pilot-commander Captain Georgi Anastasov (38) that was posthumously promoted into Major. The other two crew-members, Captain Pavel Simeonov and Captain Anatoli Apostolov, have been transferred to the military hospital in Varna and kept there for further examinations.
Immediately after the accident, Bulgarian Defense Minister Krassimir Karakachanov established investigation commission with an order to investigate the accident and within one month to come out with report on the reasons for the fatal accident. By that time, the remaining two Bulgarian Navy AS.565MB helicopters (military identification numbers 901 and 903) will remain grounded at the naval helicopter air base Chayka, near Varna. Meanwhile, Bulgarian coastline and territorial waters will be patrolled and protected by the Bulgarian Air Force fleet of Eurocopter AS.532AL Cougar multipurpose helicopters.
