How do you know most about enemy helicopter technology? By just stealing one.
In April 1987, at the end of the Libyan-Chadian border war, the Libyan forces were on the move from the neighbouring country. They left, among other things, a fully armed Libyan Mi-25, the latest export model of the famous Soviet Hind, on an airfield. Upon the arrival of French and Chadian troops, this was conquered and deposited in Ouadi Doum.
The United States Department of State got wind of the matter and negotiated with the Chad and France government to recover the Hind. The release was issued, but no Chad forces should participate in the operation.
After pre-practice in the US, a C-5 Galaxy landed at N ' Djamena airport in June 1988, in the cargo bay two special MH-47 G ′′ Chinook ′′ plus 75 soldiers. It was the famous Night Stalkers helicopters. One Chinook should transport most of the troops, as well as attachments and equipment, while others attach the Hind itself as an external load. The helicopters were unloaded and flew nearly 800 km to the parked Mi-25 in the middle of the night without being educated by the still patrolling Libyan fighter aircraft. French forces supported fighter planes with their own soldiers and Mirage F1.
The Hind was attached to the second Chinook without any problems. Due to the high weight, however, he had to refuel 3 times in predetermined field tanks on the way back and reached N ' Djamena airport with a sandstorm in his neck. Here the soviet Libyan Mi-25 and the Chinooks were distributed on two transport planes and flown to the states without incidents.
The whole action only took 67 hours and the total number of Libyan helicopters is probably missing one today.
