Red Bull Air Race Detroit 2008 Highlights
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hz_T0ovjabY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKzcdYLKDcY&feature=user
Kirby Chambliss (USA) beat Paul Bonhomme (GBR) in a spectacular Red Bull Air Race World Series battle in Detroit on Sunday in front of a crowd of 750,000 U.S. and Canadian spectators lined up along the banks of the Detroit River. Chambliss was clocked in a winning time of 1:12.08, just 0.15 seconds faster than Bonhomme (1:12.23) in the third race of the 10-stop 2008 World Series. The Brit still leads the championship. But Chambliss has proven he can be beaten.
“It worked out fairly well,” said Chambliss “I went crazy and went out as fast as I could fly. I know Paul’s going to put down a fast time. He’s got a fast airplane. I don’t know whether he went just a little bit conservative or something. But I’ll take the win.”
Hannes Arch of Austria took third with a clean run and a time of 1:12.73 beating Mike Mangold (1:15.44) in the 3rd Place Fly-Off. Arch, who joined the World Series just last season, is clearly no rookie now having come second in the first race in Abu Dhabi, fourth in San Diego and now has another podium position in Detroit.
Racing in Detroit was hampered by heavy winds that forced the cancellation of the Qualifying sessions on Saturday. But the 12 pilots more than made up for that with one of the most breathtaking and exciting races seen to date, with pilots bettering the previous time in almost every run.
More quotes from the pilots:
Kirby Chambliss (1st): “I really didn’t notice the wind much, maybe a couple knots more but I didn’t notice it.”
He said the biggest engine in the field did not help. “No, I think it’s too heavy. I know I’m nowhere near the fastest plane out here.”
He explained his punching the air with joy in the cockpit after hearing he’d won by saying he surprised he had pulled it off: “Yeah, it was only fractions of a second separating us. I was pretty happy up there. I was pretty sure he was going to beat me. He’d just a run 1:10. I knew it was impossible for me.”
Paul Bonhomme (2nd): “It was a very good race. Maybe the 1:10 (in the semis) lulled me into a false sense of security. But I was going for it in that round (final). Maybe I should have pushed a little bit harder. I did feel that I was flying a little bit more aggressively in the finals than I was in the semis. It wasn’t as smooth at all and I felt that. I’m not sure why. I think it was a little bit windier in the final. From looking at the water it looked as if there was more wind on the water and that will make a difference to the times.“
Hannes Arch (3rd): I’m really happy. I think I deserved to get on the podium. I had the second fastest run of the day. From that point of view I’m really, really happy. I thought I might have been able to beat Bonhomme in the semi-final. I was hoping to. It was a great run. But then he did a faster time. I’ve been imitating his style and as soon as I’m as fast as him, I’ll try to improve more and beat him.”
Mike Mangold (4th): “if you make a mistake you don’t get on the podium. It looked pretty clear to me when I did it (incorrect knife in the semi-finals) and the judges got the video review. So there was no getting away with it. It was a mistake. I was bad. It was simple.”
