Design for European manned spaceship unveiled
The BBC (5/28, Amos) reports that "a model of a proposed European manned spaceship has gone on show at the Berlin Air Show." The craft, produced by EADS Astrium and based on the unmanned 'Jules Verne' automated transfer vehicle (ATV) recently sent to the International Space Station, could potentially fly in the next decade if it received support from European governments".
Astrium "proposes the work be done in two stages. First, it would develop means of returning non-human items to Earth safely -- something the ATV]cannot do at present. If approved, the re-entry freight capsule could then be upgraded to carry three astronauts in a second stage of development. The second stage could be ready by as early as 2017".
The BBC notes, "The ATV Evolution is not the only concept work being undertaken in this arena," as the ESA is in talks with Russia to develop the Crew Space Transportation System (CSTS).
Russia's RIA Novosti (5/28) reports, "Russian and European space agencies are due to discuss the joint development of a manned spacecraft at a Berlin Air Show taking place May 27 to June 1," according to Roskosmos chief Anatoly Perminov. This follows an earlier statement from a Roskosmos spokesman announcing that Russia "had agreed with the European Space Agency (ESA) to jointly build a manned spacecraft for flights to near-Earth orbits and the Moon."
